Pediatric Pulmonology

Pediatric Pulmonlogy

Our pediatric pulmonology clinic focuses on the evaluation and treatment of children with problems related to breathing and airway disease. The clinic serves new and returning patients with respiratory issues such as:

• Difficult to control asthma
• Bronchopulmonary dysplasia
• Tracheomalacia/Bronchomalacia
• Congenital lung disease
• Neuromuscular-related respiratory complications
• Disorders of impaired airway clearance
• Exercise-induced respiratory dysfunction

The clinic is also devoted to the pulmonary care of children with complex medical needs (such as patients with tracheostomy and patients that are home ventilator-dependent, as well as other technology-dependent respiratory care).

SEEING THE DOCTOR

Pediatric Pulmonologist, Dr. Maple Landvoigt, personally evaluates all patients who come to our pediatric pulmonology clinic. This includes an in-depth review of the patient’s breathing problems, related symptoms, and medical history followed by a thorough physical examination. In addition, medical students and/or resident physicians may take part in this process.

At the first visit, a chest x-ray is often performed in our radiology department at the clinic. Not all children require an x-ray; however, this depends on the type of breathing problem that is being evaluated.
Breathing Tests: At the beginning of every appointment, we routinely perform spirometry. This is NOT painful and simply involves blowing hard through a mouthpiece into our computerized system that will display the efforts in a video game-like manner.

The location at Robert C. Byrd Clinic allows for high-quality spirometry, as well as on-site radiology and laboratory services necessary for subspecialty evaluation of commonly encountered respiratory dilemmas, such as recurrent pneumonia, recurrent or longstanding wheezing, intractable cough, and recurrent respiratory complaints during exercise.

TIMING

Please allow approximately 1-2 hours for the initial visit to our pediatric pulmonology clinic due to all of the detailed information that we need to cover and any additional testing. Follow up visits will typically be shorter.

BEFORE LEAVING THE CLINIC

When the evaluation by the doctor is complete and all of your questions have been answered, any needed follow-up visits will be scheduled before you leave. If any medications are needed, these will be sent electronically to your preferred pharmacy. We will also be happy to provide a note for school or work if needed.

Family Medicine

Family physicians, through education and residency training, possess distinct attitudes, skills, and knowledge which qualify them to provide continuing and comprehensive medical care, health maintenance and preventive services to each member of the family regardless of sex, age, or type of problem, be it biological, behavioral, or social. These specialists, because of their background and interactions with the family, are best qualified to serve as each patient's advocate in all health-related matters, including the appropriate use of consultants, health services, and community resources. About Us

The Robert C. Byrd Clinic (RCBC) is headquartered on the campus of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) in historic Lewisburg, WV. We are a comprehensive not-for-profit Rural Health Clinic committed to providing outstanding primary health care to the residents of the Greenbrier Valley.

The clinic opened in 1976 as the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine Clinic, Inc. and was housed in the south wing of WVSOM. It served as a faculty practice and teaching site for WVSOM students and professors. In addition to its teaching mission, The WVSOM Clinic, Inc. quickly identified the need for primary health care services in Greenbrier County and began to grow.

Thanks to a federal appropriation that was secured by the late Senator Robert C. Byrd in January 1997, The WVSOM Clinic, Inc. relocated to its present location at the north end of the WVSOM campus and officially became known as the Robert C. Byrd Clinic. Since our initial expansion in 1997, RCBC has continued growing by leaps and bounds. The clinic not only provides a site for WVSOM faculty to practice but also allows us to conduct research and offer clinical training opportunities for future osteopathic physicians.

RCBC offers a wide range of primary care services and extended office hours to meet your needs.

Our services include family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, pediatric pulmonology, osteopathic manipulative medicine, physiatry, and EMG services, proctology, behavioral health, acute care, diabetic education, medical acupuncture, social services, nutrition services, radiology, and ultrasound. We have an on-site laboratory operated by Mako and a satellite clinic located in Rupert, WV. We have been designated as a Level 3 Patient-Centered Medical Home by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).

Now with over 40 physicians, nurse practitioners, residents, and interns on staff, RCBC continues to deliver quality health care services to the residents of the Greenbrier Valley and collectively looks forward to providing “Quality Healthcare…Close to Home” for many years to come.
